Renewable Energy Task Team Encouraged by Announcement of New Transmission System Investments

The Renewable Energy Task Team is very
encouraged by the announcement by Hydro One that it will act on the
recommendation of the Ontario Power Authority and begin the process of seeking
approvals for a new transmission line to delivery electricity from the Bruce
region to Ontario’s electricity consumers.
“The Bruce region has one of the best wind resources in Ontario and the
impediment to harnessing this resource has been lack of transmission,” said
Liz Cussans, Chair of the Renewable Energy Task Team. “This new transmission
line will facilitate a significant amount of new, renewable power.”
investment could allow for up to 1700MW in new renewable electricity
generation. The province needs over 20,000MWs of new power supply to be built
in the coming years to meet new demand and replace aging power plants.
“The government’s direction on the Bruce corridor sends a clear message
that new transmission is a matter of provincial interest,” said Paul Norris,
President of the Ontario Waterpower Association. “There are significant
renewable energy opportunities across the province, and in the north in
particular, that could be enabled by a proactive approach to new
transmission.”
The Renewable Energy Task Team represents several of the major renewable
power generators and developers in Ontario. The Canadian Wind Energy
Association (CanWEA), the Association of Power Producers of Ontario (APPrO)
and the Ontario Waterpower Association (OWA) are also members of the Renewable
Energy Task Team.
